Graue Zellen

About us

Why this exists

It started with a contradiction close to home: caring about nature while working with AI every single day. The obvious response is to avoid knowing too precisely. The other one is to measure.

What came out was that the question cannot be answered credibly at all — not because it is too hard, but because nobody publishes the numbers. Graue Zellen grew out of that: first a tool for our own consumption, then one for companies.

The name is a pun that works in German: artificial grey cells run on grey electricity. Green is deliberately absent from our design.

Who is behind it

Felix Degeler

Degeler Consulting e.U., Vienna. Digitalisation projects, lately mostly with AI tools — hence the contradiction above.

Phillipp Risch

Authorised officer at a wind energy company. Brings the side where electricity is produced rather than consumed.

What it grew from

The predecessor is AI-Foodprint, an open-source tool that measures the footprint of your own AI usage. It has been running for months and surfaced the uncomfortable questions that now sit in the methodology.
